Having met in the late 1950s at Schiffs- und Maschinenbau AG Mannheim, both are interested in drawing and art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1962, he decided - as Tauchert had done a few years earlier - to study at the Werkkunstschule (formerly Freie Akademie) in Mannheim. Halberstadt actually wanted to study painting, but then he met the sculptor Hans Nagel (1926–1978) at the art school and became his assistant. The first work he assisted Nagel with was a concrete wall piece (1962) in the courtyard of the Mannheim Health Department.
