ATLANTIC | Jumbo Worldmaster
Superextra
1950s
Atlantic was founded in 1888 in Bettlach, a village near Grenchen in Switzerland, by Eduard Kummer,, born on March 26, 1845. He was also one of the "drivers" of traditional Swiss watchmaking. During many years of training and further education in the Swiss Jura, he constantly honed his skills as a watchmaker. On his return to Bettlach, the locals recognized Kummer's ambitions and supported him in setting up an industrial base, which immediately became the heart of Swiss watchmaking. The vision of producing a high-quality Swiss watch became a reality. In 1888, 15-20 people were employed in the watch workshop. After steady growth, 720 people were employed in the factory before the end of the 19th century.
Although Eduard Kummer was considered very traditional, he firmly believed in the development of the watch industry. At that time, 6 working days of 11 hours each were normal. There was neither paid vacation nor a 13th month's pay. The introduction of 6 paid vacation days at EKB in 1937 was a breakthrough.
The company was originally founded under the name EKB (Eduard Kummer Bettlach). In the early days, the company sold watch components to renowned brands such as Longines, Certina and many other watch manufacturers. The first watches under the name "Atlantic" and a sextant as a logo were sold in 1932. These included one of the first waterproof chronographs. With the invention of the "Speed Switch" in 1960, Atlantic set a milestone in watchmaking history. An innovation that made it possible to change the date 52 times faster than before. By selling this invention to other watch manufacturers, Atlantic clearly demonstrates its watchmaking skills.
The flagship of the Atlantic brand is the well-known "Worldmaster" family. With this family, the company achieved a high level of recognition and the models are still regarded today as a symbol of the brand.
