BAUME & MERCIER | Super Jumbo Chronograph
18 Carat Solid Red Gold
Ref. 3940
1940s
For your collection of incredibly fine and impressive vintage chronographs, there is this Baume & Mercier Jumbo Chronograph, manufactured in the 1940s, preserved in first-class condition.
In contrast to what was customary at the time, this Baume & Mercier Reference 3940 was crafted in the most exquisite manner from 750 solid gold, not only the entire 38 mm jumbo case and case back, but also the additional anti-magnetic inner case back & even the spring bars between the lugs - imagine that! Also made of solid red gold are the indices on the dial, the complete handset & both totalizers.
Baume & Mercier produced even the yellow gold version of this model in very limited quantities for an exceedingly select clientele. Only a handful of examples are made in Red Gold. We have one of these incredibly rare specimens here, in a condition that is not only collectible but almost unique.
A golden opportunity to own a chronograph from Baume & Mercier at its finest.
Crafted entirely from 18-karat RED GOLD.
Bloody handsome timemachine!

Unlike many other Swiss watch companies, the immediate history of the house of Baume & Mercier began not in French-speaking western Switzerland, but near the capital city of Bern. More specifically, Joseph-Célestin and Louis-Victor Baume founded the "Société Baume Frères" in 1830 in Le Bois, a small village in the Bernese Jura. Under the name "Baume Brothers", the company opened a branch in London. At the end of the 19th century, the company already enjoyed an excellent international reputation and advanced to become a major player in the overseas watchmaking industry. At that time, the company was famous for its chronographs and its models with grand complications. At international exhibitions, the company's timepieces win the Grand Prix ten times and seven gold medals worldwide. Just before the beginning of the 1920s, the director of the company, William Baume and Paul Mercier merge their business. Together, they founded the Baume & Mercier, Genève brand in 1918.
