Michael Vonbank, born in Bludenz, Austria, also studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. The exceptional artist, who died in 2015, worked intensively as a painter, draftsman, man of letters, sculptor, photographer and performer and created a very large and significant body of artistic work.
Michael Vonbank's art is intuitive, unfiltered, spontaneous and powerful. He worked quickly, without touch-ups, never revisiting a work. He brought ideas to the point in a matter of seconds. He was the medium of his spontaneous inspirations, he was the mouthpiece and driver of his inexhaustible creative reservoir. Michael Vonbank had already been working as an autodidactic draftsman and literary artist for six years before he was accepted by Christian Ludwig Attersee into the master class of painting at the University of Applied Arts in 1991, where he graduated with honors four years later. His diploma thesis "Man, animal or demon - the flip side of my being" was awarded the Prize of the Province of Tyrol. "Vonbank's art helps us...dig and rummage in this other archive, filled not with alien images, but with our own, "virtual"...dream, imagination, fantasy, fear, and happiness images. Vonbank's configurations....therefore have archetypal qualities, and it is precisely these that can have a catalytic effect on the correspondence with the holdings of our archives of self-produced images, since these also have "archetypal" components," says Lucas Gehrmann, curator of the Kunsthalle Wien, describing the fascination and significance of Michael Vonbank's comprehensive body of work.
