The Gallet MultiChron 30M Up & Down chronograph represented a milestone in the field of professional timekeeping. Since it was specifically designed for applications where recording events took precedence over displaying the time, the hour and minute hands occupied a less prominent position on the dial. This unique layout provided a clear, unobstructed view of both the push-button-activated seconds hand and the minute counter.
Soon after its introduction, the Gallet MultiChron 30M Up & Down chronograph became the timekeeping instrument of choice for pilots, doctors, technicians, and professional athletes, and was the first official wrist chronograph of the Indianapolis 500 races. The MultiChron was originally manufactured with a single pusher to start, stop, and reset the timing mechanism. The second series, featuring an additional pusher, allowed the wearer to start and stop the timer without having to fully reset the hands to zero.
Internal company documents from 1929 show that Gallet acquired the exclusive rights to the movement caliber from Venus and supplied “private-label” Up & Down Chronographs to Rolex, Girard-Perregaux, Harvard, and other Swiss manufacturers.
