Günter Fruhtrunk
1923 München – 1982 München
Günter Fruhtrunk was a painter and graphic artist. He is an important representative of post-war art in the field of constructive painting. His theme was abstraction. In 1951 Fruhtrunk made a trip to Paris and worked in Fernand Léger's studio. In 1955 he worked in the studio of Hans Arp. Fruhtrunk took part in the 4th Documenta in Kassel and the 34th Biennale in Venice. From 1967 until his death he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
His most famous work: The 1970 design on the plastic bag of the supermarket discounter “Aldi-Nord", there is probably no other edition in the world that has been sold so cheaply so often. At the time, shortly after accepting the Aldi order, according to a story that is often circulated in this context, Fruhtrunk is said to have entered the rooms of his class at the Munich Academy - where he had been teaching as a professor since 1967 - with the words "I have sinned". Then the artist paid a kind of symbolic fine of 400 marks into the coffee fund. Today, when business acumen is considered more of a virtue in the art world, that sounds strange. In fact, unlike other artists, Fruhtrunk's reputation suffered lastingly. Unlike the Stuttgart painter and graphic artist Anton Stankowski, who prevailed against seven competitors with his design for the logo of “Deutsche Bank” in 1972, or Victor Vasarely, who designed a diamond logo for the French car company Renault in 1972. The production of the plastic bag of Fruhtrunk was continued until 2018.
Günter Fruhtrunk's work "Blaue Partikel" was created in 1971.
