THE FASCINATING STORY BEHIND THE FOUNDING OF THE BRAND MARCONI & ROLEX
THE ORIGINS OF THE MARCONI BRAND | Hans Wilsdorf’s vision to register the name “Marconi” as early as January 1911 - even before he officially patented the name “Rolex” on November 15, 1915 - was a stroke of genius in Rolex marketing. In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi successfully demonstrated the first use of radio waves as a means of communication. In 1909, Marconi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, and his company had become a major commercial success. Radio communication was considered “cutting-edge technology” and captivated the general public. Hans Wilsdorf was convinced that by registering the name MARCONI for Rolex watches, he would directly associate his groundbreaking watch technology and engineering with the revolutionary innovations and advances of MARCONI radio waves. This led to the creation of the Rolex Marconi, which went into production in the 1920s.
MARCONI SERIES 1920 | Only the very best movements that Rolex could produce were used for the Marconi series. Rolex did not apply the Marconi name to its standard models, but exclusively to its most expensive lines - limited-edition models for customers for whom price was virtually irrelevant and who literally wanted the best of the best. The cost of purchasing a MARCONI reflected the enormous amount of work and attention to detail that went into every single piece. The majority of these Marconi watches were sold through a very small group of renowned London jewelers and a very select few jewelers in Italy, whose clients could afford the high prices. In addition, Rolex produced exclusive Marconi models for other unique, world-renowned jewelers and watch retailers, such as Cuervo y Sobrinos Habana in Cuba. Ultimately, it was the MARCONI - with its handcrafted and hand-assembled movements and meticulous attention to detail - that established a legendary reputation for precision and reliability and positioned Rolex’s status as the world’s finest wristwatch manufacturer.
