John Zinsser
1961 New York

Zinsser lives in Brooklyn, NY and has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States since late 1980. He studied art history at Yale University (BA, 1983) and has written extensively for such publications as Art in America, FlashArt and ArtNet and was a co-founder of Journal of Contemporary Art in 1987. A longtime lecturer at New School University, Zinsser’s teaching provides contextual readings of current museum and gallery shows in New York City. His paintins can be found in museum and in private collections internationally from Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC), Richard Brown Baker Collection, Yale University Art Gallery as well as Sammlung Goetz (Munich, Germany). In addition to his artistic work, he is a writer, curator and lecturer.

"I have always been attracted to colours as they exist in the world, rather than making imitative color. All of these colors have associations to observed experience." John Zinsser

The Old School - The New School | Does he exist - the universal artist? | The one who sees, perceives and reflects everything? | John Zinsser is a painter, but also a New York intellectual, an observer, a communicator, a networker, a teacher. He is an intense observer of everything that goes on around him. He is interested in people, their views, their abilities, their actions. He particularly likes to turn to young people, wants to learn from them what moves them. He himself has his finger on the pulse of the times, always open to new things. He likes to share, exciting, knowledgeable, lively, enthusiastic and inspiring. John seeks the confrontation, it is important to him. He wants to confront what those around him think. He shares his views with people all over the world, from different regions, and across generations. He exchanges ideas with scientists, artists, the people next door, as well as with children and young people. He is cosmopolitan.
