Beginning around 1900, platinum was used to create watches. Like most jewelry metals, platinum is often combined with other metals to help the metalsmith or jeweler accomplish his feats.
Another white precious metal, iridium, is often combined with platinum. It is extremely rare and hard and has a high melting point. The higher the melting point, the more difficult it is to work with, because jewelry making and design requires the metal to be melted and reshaped.
Why is iridium combined with platinum? It makes platinum even more resistant. High class platinum watches are usually made of 10% iridium and 90% platinum. You will then find the hallmark: "10 Irid. 90 Plat.". Just like the hallmarking on this beautiful Jules Jürgensen on the back of the case.
The rectangular platinum case itself has a brushed face and a polished side - featuring a satined off-white dial. A fabulous preserved platinum dresswatch by Jules Jürgensen, Est.ed Copenhagen 1740.

Brief excursion | Platinum knowledge: Platinum watches are heavy! Due to their material properties, purity, and the use of alloys like iridium, they are significantly heavier than watches made of gold or stainless steel.
Material: Platinum's High Density: Platinum is one of the densest and heaviest metals (approx. 21.4 g/cm³) and therefore considerably heavier than gold (approx. 19.3 g/cm³) or silver. A platinum watch case is thus about 20% heavier than a comparable gold case of the same volume.
Purity: Unlike 18-karat gold, which consists of 75% pure gold (750), platinum used in high-quality watches is usually classified as 900 platinum, meaning it consists of 90% pure platinum.
Alloys: To make platinum harder and more durable in watchmaking, it is often alloyed with iridium (platinum-iridium). Iridium is one of the most valuable and densest metals in the platinum group and further increasing density and weight.
Look & feel: Platinum watches are distinguished by a unique character based on the special physical properties of this precious metal. They are considered the epitome of understatement and exclusivity. Platinum has a distinctive, subtle, cool luster, often described as resembling moonlight or a bright silvery sheen. And platinum watches are heavy. This weight is perceived by collectors as conveying a sense of quality & substantial feel.
