1950s

For your collection of incredibly unique Full Calendar Chronograph vintage watches, there is this moon phase masterpiece from L. Sundstedt / Stockholm. Sundstedt was an outstanding watchmaker, inventor and developer in the 1940s to 1960s.

__

He was known as a specialist developer of ultra-high-precision chronographs in the field and utilization of dashboard clocks and extremely precise instruments for Scandinavian Airforce jets and their most demanding pilots.

Also well-known are Sundstedt’s ship chronometers. Swedish and Finnish ships were equipped with the highly precise and likewise tough chronometers at the time.

Somehow, this technical connection and influence is no wonder when you come from the family of the world's legendary aviation pioneer, Hugo Sundstedt.

Hugo Sundstedt
1886 Örebro - 1966 New York

He was born Hugo Leonardsson in Örebro on July 12, 1886, the fourth child of an unmarried woman. The family lived in straitened circumstances and in 1892 he was auctioned off to a shoe dealer for 75 Swedish kronor. In 1897 he was adopted by the businessman Olof Sundstedt. He now had the opportunity to study, but as the results of his studies were not good, he applied to join the Swedish navy as a cadet in 1901. After leaving the fleet in 1904, he got a job in an office in Örebro. As he did not like sitting behind a desk, he applied to the merchant navy in October 1905 but was disembarked in Cardiff on February 19, 1906. He returned to Sweden and took a job as a cab driver in Stockholm in 1908, a job he held until 1911.

In Stockholm, he met the car dealer Carl Cederström, who had completed his flying diploma in France in 1910, which aroused Sundstedt's interest. He began to help Cederström with the plane free of charge in order to gain his own flying experience and eventually obtain a pilot's license himself. He made his first flight in the year 1912 on June 1, in Ljungbyhed in Cederström's plane, a Blériot XI named Nordstjernan (The North Star). With some wealthy businessmen from Örebro as sponsors, he managed to buy the Nordstjernan from Cederström. During one of his longer flights, on June 21, 1912, he broke the Scandinavian altitude record when he reached an altitude of 1,800 meters during a two-and-a-half-hour flight over Malmen. ALL THE REST IS HISTORY.

L. Sundstedt later developed his legendary chronographs for various Swedish Airforce jets from SAAB (Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget), in particular for manufacturers such as Jaeger Le Coultre as well as for Heuer-Leonidas and more..

Best known are his high-class chronographs in the jets: SAAB 29 Tunnan, Saab 32 Lansen and of course especially the legendary Saab 35 Draken.

By the way - very interesting to know: Sweden used to have some excellent clock & watch factories. The very famous camera manufacturer “Hasselblad” originally started out as a watch manufacturer, same as IBM. Quite remarkably, Jaeger LeCoultre also made cameras for a short time.
