Nivada Grenchen was founded in 1879 by Jacob Schneider in the city of Grenchen, Switzerland. The company became well known, especially from the 1950s onward, and produced a range of successful watches, from elegant Dresswatches to Sportswatches and even Chronographs. In 1926, Nivada began operations in Grenchen under the name Wüllimann Schneider Nivada SA and was known for its high-quality, serially manufactured watches. In 1979, Nivada celebrated its 100th anniversary. At that time, the company was led by Max Schneider, the son of the company’s founder. Nivada was not permitted to use its name in the 1960s and 1970s due to its phonetic similarity to Movado, so the products were marketed as “Nivada Grenchen.” In the United States, Croton (founded in Italy in 1878, later headquartered in New Jersey) became the U.S. distribution partner for Nivada products, so many watches were sold there under the names “Croton Nivada,” “Croton Nivada Grenchen,” and simply “Croton” to avoid issues with the name’s similarity to Movado.
Here we have an exceedingly rare Nivada from the 1960s that features its original brand name, “Nivada”, without the standard additions typical of that production period. It is an exclusive release of the “Stima" co-branding sports watch model with a day/date function, equipped with an automatic movement in a distinct case design combined with a fabulous matching steel bracelet - featuring many exquisite details, such as the red second hand.
And here's how this co-branding came about: In 1944, Albert Steinmann founded the Stima brand in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the world-famous center of the Swiss watch industry. Nivada acquired the rights to the name, officially registered the Stima brand in 1952 and produced distinctive sports watches, diver’s watches and chronographs in the 1950s and 1960s that proudly featured the Stima co-branding on the dial.
