The first thing striking about this Rolex is its raised, big and bold” “Rolex” lettering on top of the delicate sunburst finished dial and the distinctive hour markers, known as “shark’s tooth” indexes. What catches the eye next are the faceted dauphine hands, the shiny blued second pointer and especially the “Roulette Date” featuring red for even days and black for odd days. One little thing that makes this Rolex “Officially Certified Chronometer” genuinely exceptional it is the “TRU-DATE” lettering on the dial.
This exquisite vintage serif dial shows a clearly visible patina of age, simultaneously being in remarkably well-preserved condition considering its true age of over 70 years - as this Rolex was manufactured in the late 1950s and was overhanded to its first owner in the mid-1960s in Geneva at the prestigious boutique “Watches of Geneva” located inside of the "Hotel Intercontinental Geneve".
The last known officially authorized service at Rolex was performed in the year 1998. The watch itself remains 100% original. A gorgeous vintage masterpiece.

In the 1950s, Rolex was in a period of extensive brand and model developments. After Hans Wilsdorf introduced the Datejust (with automatic date change) in 1945 and the first Oysterdate models in the early 1950s, Rolex experimented with various names on the dials to position the new date window feature in the market.
Before standard names such as “Oysterdate,” “Date,” or “Datejust” became established worldwide as fixed product lines, small production runs, test models, or prototypes were printed with alternative lettering. The “TRU-DATE” inscription was intended to communicate to Rolex customers that this watch, with its date display, shows the current date immediately - at first glance. It also highlights the groundbreaking innovation of that era, in the years 1956/1957: The instantaneous date change. In early versions of the date mechanism, the date slowly changed over a period of time leading up to midnight. It was only from this period onward that, thanks to a redesigned movement, the date changed with true precision and in the blink of an eye at midnight, hence “TRU-DATE”.

The “TRU-DATE” was not a separate model series, but rather a purely transitional or test dial. It is believed that Rolex produced these watches only in very small batches to test customer reaction to the date function. Shortly thereafter, the name “Oysterdate” became established and the “TRU-DATE” lettering disappeared for good.
The Rolex Reference 6534 is one of the brand’s absolute milestones: It was introduced in the mid-1950s and is historically considered the very first official “Oyster Perpetual Date” in standard size 34 mm with an automatic movement Caliber 1030. This Rolex, however, features a 35 mm jumbo case, a size that was pretty rare for that point in time.

GENEVA AS LOCATION | Under the leadership of founder Hans Wilsdorf, who established the brand in Geneva and founded the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation in 1944/1960, Geneva became the worldwide center of Rolex (** more detailed information on this topic can be found at the very end of this description). During this time, the term “Rolex of Geneva” was synonymous with uncompromising Swiss precision, global marketing, and this company’s establishment as worldwide luxury brand.

HOTEL INTERCONTINENTAL GENEVE
The InterContinental Geneva hotel opened on January 30, 1964.
The InterContinental Geneva never had a single-brand Rolex boutique (as exists today), but in the 1960s and 1970s, the hotel was home to a renowned, independent multi-brand luxury jeweler called “Watches of Geneva.” This store was an official Rolex authorized dealer.
The fact that the “Watches of Geneva” boutique at the InterContinental Geneva sold very special, rare, and in some cases exclusively available watches to a select clientele is due to the unique historical intersection of geopolitics, luxury, and Rolex’s distribution philosophy at the time.
This extraordinary boutique, in what was a unique hotel for its time, took advantage of its privileged location for several reasons:
- The “Allocation” Principle and the Power of Location | Even back then, Rolex allocated extremely rare models - such as early Daytona chronographs, Submariners with special dials, or exclusive textured gold models - only to dealers who could demonstrate that they served the most prestigious clientele. Since “Watches of Geneva” at the InterContinental could guarantee that the watches would go to the most powerful and influential people in the world, Rolex gave the store preferential treatment by supplying it with absolute rarities.
- Absolute Discretion and Security for VVIPs | In the 1960s and 70s, high-ranking state guests, diplomats, and billionaires could not (and did not want to) simply walk unprotected down the public Rue du Rhône (Geneva’s main shopping street) to buy watches. First, at the hotel, they were protected by the hotel’s security team and their own staff. Second, the owner of the watch store could arrange discreet private presentations right in the hotel’s luxury suites. Third, rare pieces were often not even displayed in the store windows but kept exclusively in the safe for these state visits.
- Diplomatic Perks and Tax Exemption | The InterContinental is located in the immediate surroundings of the UN headquarters (Palais des Nations). Many of the guests staying there enjoyed diplomatic immunity or shopped tax-free. For affluent travelers from the Middle East, the U.S., or Asia, purchasing a highly exclusive Rolex in Switzerland - especially from the InterContinental Hotel - was the ultimate status symbol and souvenir.
- Backdoor sales of collectibles | In today’s vintage market, it’s clear that dealers like “Watches of Geneva” were often the first to gain access to prototypes, limited-edition runs, or watches with “exotic dials” (such as the Paul Newman Daytona). If a dealer knew, for example, that an important peace conference was about to take place at the hotel, he would specifically order or set aside the most spectacular and expensive watches, because this clientele’s willingness to pay was practically limitless.
With a vintage Rolex and the box from “Watches of Geneva – Hotel Intercontinental,” you’re not just buying a watch - you’re buying a piece of history that’s all about diplomacy, espionage, and the jet set.
By the way: It’s not just that “Watches of Geneva,” for example, offered unique timepieces; these watches also came from a certain place - while it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s known that at that time, Rolex in Geneva had an “Atelier Prototypes” within its “Departement Technique” dedicated to very special test dials and prototype watches >> see the last picture for more on this.

That this Rolex Reference 6534 was produced by the end of 1958 (stamped in caseback) but first sold to a client at such a location no sooner than five years later indicates the significance this timepiece already attained at that time.
This was apparently evident once again three decades later, when the watch was serviced at Rolex. All components were preserved, but for safety reasons, only the clasp was replaced with a Rolex service clasp (in the year 1998 / with clasp code U11), but not, mind you, with the contemporary version of reference “78350,” but rather with an original from that era bearing reference “7835,” mounted on the original riveted Oyster bracelet. The Rolex service box, including the Rolex travel case, is well preserved, as pictured, and comes with the watch.
Last but not least, this fantastic Rolex also features one of the rare “magic numbers” as its serial number: #40.88.XX. These kind of special serial numbers were often paired with distinctive models and set aside for exclusive clientele.

** The years 1944 and 1960—these two different dates for the founding of the “Hans Wilsdorf Foundation”—can be explained as follows: 1944 was the emotional catalyst and the preparatory phase, as Wilsdorf’s wife, Florence, passed away in April 1944. Since the couple had no children, a deeply shaken Wilsdorf decided that same year to secure his life’s work. Planning with lawyers began immediately, which is why some sources list 1944 as the year of the foundation’s establishment. The foundation was then officially registered on August 1, 1945.
The actual transfer of ownership did not take place until 1960, because although the foundation had existed since 1945, Hans Wilsdorf retained control and ownership of the shares throughout his lifetime. When he died on July 6, 1960, his will took effect. It was only at that moment that 100% of the Rolex shares were officially and permanently transferred to the foundation. Since 1960, the foundation has been the sole owner of the watchmaking group.
