The Daytona references 6263 and 6265 were also crafted in 14-karat and 18-karat solid gold over a period of 17 years. It is estimated that Rolex produced only a total of 1,500 of these watches during these years, which corresponds to an annual production of about 100 pieces.
It is likely that production during this period was not linear and was higher in the later years. Auctions held by the most prestigious auction houses feature significantly more gold models from the 1980–1987 period than from the 1970–1979 period. The early gilt-dial dials are rare, especially the serif variant.
The most sought-after of all these dials is presented here: A matte black dial with champagne subdials, distinguished by its modern typeface variant featuring gilt dial serif lettering.
