The Rolex “Semi-Bubbleback” and “Big-Bubbleback” are collector nicknames for historic Rolex models from the 1930s through the 1950s. This reference 6085 marks the transition to the 1950s Rolex sports models and is the predecessor of the Rolex Explorer (called the “Pre-Explorer”). The term ‘Bubbleback’ originated because Rolex had to significantly curve the back of the watch to make room for the new, bulky automatic rotor (the “Perpetual” mechanism). The Semi-Bubbleback variant marks the evolution toward flatter watches with a more understated case back. The Rolex Semi-Bubbleback is one of the rare transitional models. The case back is less domed than on the very first models. As movement technology advanced, the movements became flatter, eliminating the need for the extreme “bubble” caseback of the early days. These were produced from the late 1940s through the early 1950s, as Rolex navigated the transition to flatter, more solid automatic watches. The Rolex references 6084 and 6085 are considered the most iconic masterpieces.
This particular Rolex variant of a reference 6085 is such a remarkable find - an impressive historical timepiece for any significant Rolex Vintage collection.

The last documented official Rolex service on this masterpiece was performed in 1995 in the United States by a true legend - the renowned Rolex specialist Walter Gooden.
Walter Gooden Inc. was a well-known and highly respected luxury watch service company based in Los Angeles, California. The company was regarded as a pioneer in the industry and was particularly known for its long-standing partnership with the Rolex watch brand.
The company was founded by Walter C. Gooden Jr. He was regarded as a pioneer in the watch repair industry, making a name for himself particularly in the area of service quality. For a period of 21 years, Walter Gooden Inc. served as Rolex’s exclusive repair and service representative on the U.S. West Coast. The service center steadily expanded its portfolio. In addition to Rolex, it later began servicing and repairing watches from other luxury brands as well as various Swatch Group brands. Founder Walter C. Gooden passed away in September 2009. Before his retirement, he sold his company, which was subsequently acquired by the Swatch Group. The family-owned business (his son Robert Gooden was also actively involved for many years) was widely known for its high standards in the professional restoration and maintenance of mechanical heirlooms and the most valuable vintage watches.
Walter Gooden's service on this vintage dream watch has fully preserved all original Rolex components of this timepiece, manufactured in 1952, in its original state. Crucially, Rolex produced only a very limited number of these chronometers with the RED OFFICIALLY dial & this authentic example is 100% factory original.
For safety reasons, the clasp was the only part replaced in the 1970s; however, it is still the original vintage version and is marked as such. The entire original, riveted bracelet is in excellent condition, along with the original Super Oyster crown, and even the original crystal is in magnificent condition.

All of this in a condition straight out of a time capsule.
