Theodor Werner
1886 Jettenburg - 1969 München

Werner is considered one of the most important pioneers of abstract painting in Germany. At the end of the 1920s, the man from Jettenburg met Pablo Picasso in Paris and became friends with Georges Braque and Joan Miró.

After training at the teacher training college in Kirchberg, Theodor Werner studied alongside his professional activity in 1908/09 at the “Stuttgarter Akademie” with Robert Poetzelsberger. From 1909 to 1914 he went to Paris several times to study and received private training in Charles Guérin's studio. After military service, Werner lived as a freelance painter in Großsachsenheim near Stuttgart until 1929. In 1930 he went to Paris, where he became a member of the artists' group "Abstraction-Création". A year later he married the painter Anneliese Rütgers, known as Woty. After his return to Germany in 1935, Theodor Werner was banned from painting and exhibiting and was officially considered a degenerate artist. During the war he was conscripted as a technical draftsman. A bomb attack in the last year of the war destroys most of his life's work. Werner spent the years 1946 to 1959 in Berlin, where he was a member of the "ZEN" group from 1950 to 1955. He received the title of professor from the “Berliner Akademie der Künste”. He becomes an honorary member and finally, in 1956, honorary senator of the “Hochschule für Bildende Künste”. In 1959 Werner moved to Munich. Numerous national and international exhibitions as well as awards such as the “Kunstpreis der Stadt Berlin” (1951), the “Internationale Preis Lissone” (Mailand 1953) and the “Kritikerpreis der Stadt Berlin” (1954) bear witness to his recognition. His pictures are represented in the "Stuttgarter Staatsgalerie" as well as in the collections of the "New York Museum of Modern Art".
