Thomax was not a traditional watch manufacturer with its own history, which is why there are no entries in major encyclopedias regarding its owners or a physical headquarters in the Swiss Jura.
This rare brand, known for its technically sophisticated watches produced in the 1950s and 1960s, falls under the “Établissage” category in the watch industry. As such an “Établisseur”, Thomax produced its chronographs only in very small batches. To do so, the brand sourced reliable Valjoux movements, modified them to meet its own specifications, and obtained custom-made dials and hands from specialized manufacturers.

The purpose of yachting chronographs is to allow the skipper to keep track of the countdown period before a yacht race begins. The distinctive feature of this Thomax Yachting Chronograph is a blue “regatta start” minute counter at three o'clock. This counter allows the wearer to count down from 5 minutes, a period of significance in yacht racing, as boat captains are required to navigate their vessels to the starting line before the regatta begins. In addition, the deep black dial features an outer scale with a “tachymeter” function.
A tachymeter on a watch is a scale used to measure speed or distance based on time; for this purpose, the scale works in conjunction with the chronograph / stopwatch function.
It is well known that the tachymeter is used to measure speeds in racing. Less well known is that the tachymeter can also be used to measure distances, specifically when the speed is constant, such as in yachting.
The remarkable functionality of this chronograph is enhanced by the excellent legible multicolored dial, the deep red hands for the seconds and totalizers, as well as the Valjoux movement caliber, renowned for its high level of precision, accurate timekeeping & reliable performance.
