Walter Tauchert translates his own writings or passages from world literature into words and images in his woodcuts.
His latest exhibition at the Mannheim University Library, for example, features the series of images “Mainzer Metamorphose” (Mainz Metamorphosis), based on Carl Zuckmayer's text “Beim Anblick des Doms” (At the Sight of the Cathedral). Other images are inspired by “Egyptian Books”.
Walter Tauchert's images are characterized by his highly distinctive language. Like words, Tauchert's works are mostly unique - even for lithographs, he regularly chooses production methods that allow for only a few copies, such as 3-5 pieces, or even just a single unique work of art.

Walter Tauchert is friends with the artist Herbert Halberstadt, “A Life Devoted to Steel and Art” (1935-2020). Having met in the late 1950s at Schiffs- und Maschinenbau AG Mannheim, both are interested in drawing and art.
In 1962, he decided - as Tauchert had done a few years earlier - to study at the Werkkunstschule (formerly Freie Akademie) in Mannheim. Halberstadt actually wanted to study painting, but then he met the sculptor Hans Nagel (1926–1978) at the art school and became his assistant. The first work he assisted Nagel with was a concrete wall piece (1962) in the courtyard of the Mannheim Health Department. This work was realized through the joint construction of the wooden formwork together with Walter Tauchert.
